Colourful picture of stacked books on a garden wall with flowers

The Museum of Moving Art exists in a fantasy world. We call the fictional narrative that forms the foundation of the MOMA hybrid-game "the Story Garden".

In a recursive way, the gameplay also enhances and develops the Story Garden. This happens:

  • face-to-face in the tabletop and live action role playing iterations of our game
  • online here - through player contributions the fantasy grows in this Story Garden section of the wiki
  • in open world simulators players make up and participate in scenarios
  • in any other iteration of the MOMA Game story telling is a key interactive component

A world-class institution on a small Pacific island

Once upon a time there was an island in the south Pacific called Fafifi. It is in a rare class of Pacific islands, in that Fafifi was never colonized by the global North, in fact, by quirk of fate Island of Fafifi was simultaneously settled in 1780 by a shipload of pirates & queer refugees from London who met up with a fleet of Pacific Islanders fleeing unrelenting war on their home island Bali Hai.

The result of the fateful contact of these two quite different (yet interestingly similar) ethnic groups, is the story we are to discover and tell. Largely the ,new settlers decided to co-operate and make love. A creole language quickly evolved along with a politics fueled by the strong tribal traditions of the Islanders and revolutionary sentiments of the alienated Europeans. The resulting population eventually formed a nation state - the Commonwealth of Fafifi.

Now, over two centuries later (after fortuitously evading invasion during the second World War), Fafifi has grown into a small but significant country with a population of 96,230 (2020 census) and a thriving economy based on agriculture, regional transportation (maritime & aviation), education and eco-ethno-tourism.

Gateways to the Garden

Among other things, the mind map below illustrates two important ideas relating to the MOMA fantasy, these ideas are:

  • the flourishing of non-linear story telling
  • the variety of different pathways and gateways into that story world.

A larger view of the mind can be obtained by clicking on the image (and then selecting "more details").

A mind map showing initial ideas for a non-linear story world with various entry and exit points, and a prominent tree representing a central semi-linear story with convergent entry points and divergent story branches (arcs)

The gateways in the mind map represent the different means players and audience can access the Story Garden determined by the context in which they engage with MOMA. They represent different aspects of the MOMA Story dilivered at different occassions and within a variety of interations of the MOMA Game (for example the Table Top Board Game or an encounter with Live Action Role Play at a pop-up gallery event).
